Who's hot? Where's education innovation headed? What is the Next Big Thing?
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for building new technologies and leveraging new innovations.
But in looking for the next big thing in education, I think we tend to focus our attention in the wrong direction.
You want the Next Big Thing? Hang out with a classroom of fifth graders.
You want to see what the future looks like? Stop by a high school cafeteria on spaghetti day.
You want innovation? Ask the kids how they are hacking around the school's firewall these days.
You want to know what the Next Big Thing in education is going to be?
Are you ready for the next big thing to become the Next Big Thing?
Ah, the Next Big Thing.
Wouldn't it be great if it were learning?
How about understanding?
How about compassion?
How about being able to explain what wonder feels like?
The next big thing in education isn't going to be found on a pitch deck. It's going to be found, if just for a moment, on the edge of the open latch of the mind as a child realizes for the first time that the future is what you imagine it to be.
