Baltimore Startup — An Estuary — Announces $100,000 Investment from TEDCO

An Estuary LLC today announced a $100,000 investment from The Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) through its Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF).

An Estuary, a Baltimore based startup housed at the Emerging Technology Center at Johns Hopkins’ Eastern Campus, builds social technology to support next generation professional development. The Technology Commercialization Fund enables companies to achieve early technical milestones that are critical to move technologies further along the commercialization pathway and lead to follow-on investments.

“TEDCO’s Technology Commercialization Fund assists companies like An Estuary in bringing ideas and innovation to the marketplace,” said Robert Rosenbaum, president and executive director of TEDCO. “An Estuary’s unique social platform technology will help facilitate professional development for educators and we look forward to watching the company grow.”

Founded in April 2013, An Estuary builds technologies that address the needs of an increasingly social and mobile audience for professional development. Sanderling, a social platform for professional development, is the company’s premiere product for the education market. Currently in beta, Sanderling provides a social space easily accessible via mobile where teachers and school administrators have access to a number of community-based discovery, documentation, and micro-certification features designed to improve the process of accessing, acquiring, and achieving quality professional development.

“Professional development is a fact-of-life for the nation’s four million educators. An Estuary is building technologies that improve the quality and efficacy of professional development while offering enhancements both to the means of certifying and authenticating professional learning and to the means of identifying the most effective and engaging PD services and solutions,” said An Estuary co-founder and CEO, Shelly Blake-Plock. “Thanks to the support of TEDCO, we will be able to build out a robust system that will support the professional development of digital age educators while opening up new possibilities for innovation in education.”
